Real World Design Project: S.C. Junior Guards T-Shirt Design

Hello Students,
Our next project is a real world design competition for Santa Cruz junior Guards for their NorCal Competition for 2017. This is a great opportunity to design a product that will be highly visible and would be an excellent addition to any designers portfolio. Apparel design is always in demand and is something that any designer can produce even with a small starting budget. These shirts will be printed at NHS, check out the tour of their facility below...

S.C. Junior Guards NorCal Competition T-Shirt Design Project:
  • This project drop dead date is next January 12th, Pencil Sketches due on Tuesday for approval. Final artwork due Monday 10th to be considered for review by client.
  • You will be graded on your ability to translate the needs as dictated by our client (read project description below) to create a compelling and eye-catching design that utilizes proper application of design, color and typography and fits the style, craftsmanship and limitations as set by the client and project.
  • You are encouraged to research similar events and their designs, to use creativity and design skills to create an eye catching product for our client.
  • The final design will be chosen by the client, SC Junior Guards. Winning designer will receive examples of their final design on printed product and will have a great piece of work for their professional portfolio
Previous years shirt designs incorporate many different motifs and elements. Be creative and have fun with your designs but think of the codified visual language that exists in the life guard world and think about how you can derive elements to create your shirt design.
Project Brief / Description:
Develop, design and create a compelling T-Shirt design for the S.C. Junior Guards NorCal Competition event. This design will be printed on t-shirts and sold at the event to promote JR Guards. This shirt can be a great product for participants, parents, sponsors and spectators to remember this annual event.

Description of the Organization:
The mission of the Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard Program is to provide quality ocean safety education for participants ages 6-17.

The Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard program introduces young people to safe marine and aquatic recreational opportunities. Further, the program is designed to improve young people's physical conditioning, their understanding and respect for the environment, and their respect for themselves as well as others.

This mission is accomplished through activities including instruction and practice in open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, surfboard riding, self rescue, beach games and competition. Respect for the environment is increased by the understanding gained with daily physical contact with the environment and through lecture and discussion of pertinent marine and aquatic topics. Increased respect for participants is gained through personal progress and accomplishments. Respect for others is increased by contact with helpful instructors and by working with other youths in a team building environment. The mission also includes exposing participants to many of the skills and techniques utilized in professional lifesaving organizations.

Description of the NorCal Competition Event:
JR Guards will compete in activities such as:
  • Paddle boarding
  • Rescue - using life ring
  • Swimming and running
  • Baton races
  • 1/4 Mile Buoy paddle race

Design Directions:

  • Design must be created as vector art
  • Design must use 2 colors maximum, black and white count
  • Design must be original and not derivative or copied. Traced illustrations must be made from original photographs
  • Design must read well and have good contrast against lighter shirt colors (light grey, beige, light blue, white)
  • Design must contain all copy listed below
  • Design and artwork can be creative and expressive
  • Design should avoid looking like a surfing competition, focus on Life Guard elements and imagery (surfboards and waves can be shown but in context of rescue use)
  • Tip: People buy shirts for many reasons, to support an organization or cause, as a keepsake etc... it can be said that apparel designs that incorporate recognizable local landmarks often sell at greater numbers to tourists or visitors because they are unique to that location.

Case Study: Cabrillo CAP Shirt Design
Although I am your instructor I am also a designer with many years of experience. I love creating apparel designs because it gives a great sense of accomplishment to see your work in print or being worn. Years ago I was asked to design a t-shirt for participants of Cabrillo College's CAP, a summer academy program. They were so pleased with the design they have returned each year to update the designs for their different courses being offered. Quality design work can bring clients back again and again.
The client gave me all the copy to be included in the design and a list of courses for the summer program. After a few pencil sketches this rough example was chosen. I began roughly mocking up the design in adobe illustrator and exploring type faces and arrangement of elements.
Upon approval of the rough design I moved forward and rendered my finished design, creating a unique icon for the courses, health and medicine, agriculture, welding and criminal justice. Then I explored different color combinations for the shirt design to give the client options for printing.

My client returned the next year for an updated version, changing the welding icon to a solar technology icon. This design was to be printed on green shirts. It was decided that a complimentary orange would look good for a highlight color, with white and black for contrast. This is a 3 color print, black, white and orange.
