Graphic Design Final Project: ROP Promotional Poster

Hello Students,
Your final project is to design a promotional poster that will create interest for students in taking ROP classes. You could design a poster that creates interest for a specific class or multiple classes. If your poster qualifies it will be printed and displayed on campus and you will have another great design project for your portfolio.

Project Description:
You have just been hired by me to create a promotional poster. Your goal is to design an eye-catching and engaging poster that is suitable to display on High School bulletin boards. You should have an understanding of your audience and what will appeal to them. Your design can be creative and fun but should look professional.

Project Specifications:

  • Poster dimensions must be 11"X17"
  • Must be created in CMYK with Adobe Illustrator and/or Photoshop
  • Must use bold eye catching colors
  • Must be created with no more than 2 different font styles
  • Must be readable when printed from 10-15 away
  • Pick a class to promote, choices are Graphic Design, Web Design, Digital Photography, Video Production, Desktop Publishing
  • Use your own ideas to make this poster unique. Poster can incorporate artwork you or other students have created to show as examples. The design should feature an image of the instructor in the "about the instructor" area. Poster should provide an eye-grabbing headline to interest the viewer and guide them to a "call to action" such as requesting more information or signing up for the class with their counselor.

Project Copy:
Poster must contain this text:

  • Headline: "Learn (choose a class to feature) at Santa Cruz High School!" or an alternate headline could start with "Would you like to learn _______?"

Special Guest Speaker: Butch Colyear, Medical and Scientific Illustrator, Cartoonist, Designer and Fine Artist

"When you pay attention to your mistakes, that is when you learn." - Butch Colyear
Today our class was honored to host Butch Colyear as a special guest speaker. Butch is a medical and scientific illustrator who also works in calligraphy, cartoons, design and fine art. A San Francisco native, Butch has been surfing since 1963, received a BA in Fine Art from San Jose State College in 1971 and an MA in Medical and Biological Illustration from UCSF in 1977. Butch was generous to share his time with our class, and discussed his career path, education and gave our students a lot of advice on finding their own path to success. Butch also discussed the importance of working relationships and how to communicate with clients to ensure successful project outcomes. Butch worked at Stanford University as a medical illustrator for 27 years before starting his own company at the age of 58. Butch enjoys working as a medical illustrator because his clients are working to improve peoples lives and change the world for the better. Butch was encouraged by teachers at an early age to pursue art as a focus of study and found that copying other artists gives insight into their creative and problem solving processes, an insight that all artists and students can learn from. Butch was able to turn his passion into a career and encourages that path for everyone. You can examples of Butch's work at his website bcolyear.com.
