Today our class was honored to host Butch Colyear as a special guest speaker. Butch is a medical and scientific illustrator who also works in calligraphy, cartoons, design and fine art. A San Francisco native, Butch has been surfing since 1963, received a BA in Fine Art from San Jose State College in 1971 and an MA in Medical and Biological Illustration from UCSF in 1977. Butch was generous to share his time with our class, and discussed his career path, education and gave our students a lot of advice on finding their own path to success. Butch also discussed the importance of working relationships and how to communicate with clients to ensure successful project outcomes. Butch worked at Stanford University as a medical illustrator for 27 years before starting his own company at the age of 58. Butch enjoys working as a medical illustrator because his clients are working to improve peoples lives and change the world for the better. Butch was encouraged by teachers at an early age to pursue art as a focus of study and found that copying other artists gives insight into their creative and problem solving processes, an insight that all artists and students can learn from.
