Our next project is a real world design competition for Front Street Kitchen, a community kitchen available for rent to small food businesses who need use of a commercial kitchen. This is in collaboration with owner and operator Andrea Mollenauer who also happens to be ROP's Culinary Instructor.
Front Street Kitchens Sign Design Competition:
- This project deadline is next Thursday the 25th
- You will be graded on your ability to translate the needs as dictated by our client (read project description below) to create a compelling and eye-catching design that utilizes proper application of design, color and typography.
- You are encouraged to research similar businesses, other signs on the street front, evaluate the clients needs and make this project your own.
- There are prizes available for the winner of the competition plus 2nd and 3rd place competitors
- The winner will also have an outstanding first project to include in their portfolio, a real world project with results that show... this can be your springboard into a graphic design career

Digital artwork for a commercial kitchen/food business. Original artwork size must be large enough to be blown up into a sign on our building. It is preferred that all artwork be created as a vector design to ensure scalability.
Description of the Business:
Front Street Kitchen is:
- A community kitchen available for rent to small food businesses (tenants) who need occasional use of a commercial kitchen
- A collaboration of three woman-owned catering companies (the partners) that make the downtown community kitchen their home for prepping and cooking all of the food for their events
- A classroom – for the ROP Culinary Arts class and other public or private classes
- A location available for rent for private or community events or parties
Design Direction/Resources/Inspiration:
What needs to be on there:
- Dimensions: 48 Inches X 77 Inches
- Text: Front Street Kitchen
- Text: Our tag line "Catering Classes Community"
- Imagery: Anything food or kitchen related
What we like/need:
- The header we have on our facebook account
- A vintage look
- Possibly incorporating the look of an old agricultural fruit crate label. Examples we like are simple and not too busy
- Colours that will match a hunter green background on the building front
- A possible border, maybe even one that stems from the end of one of the letters in our business name, or looks like a branch or vine. Just a thought, not absolutely necessary.
- Any other ideas inspired by our business model are welcome.
- Nothing too modern
- Nothing too frilly
